About this course

On day one of this course candidates will learn about the causes of obesity and the links between the types of foods we eat and weight gain/loss. Candidates will also learn about the major food groups and the role of essential nutrients in weight management.

On day two, candidates will explore and discuss the myths and facts of fad diets; and the impact of sleep and exercise in weight management. Candidates will also learn about triggers of fat storing and fat burning hormones; including the role of the liver in weight management. Also on day two, candidates will learn how to plan a range of nutritionally balanced meals to support successful ‘long-term’ weight reduction and health improvement.

By the end of this course participants will be able to:

  • Define obesity
  • Discuss and outline the causes of obesity
  • Outline the associated health risk factors of obesity
  • Calculate and interpret BMI and Waist to Hip Ratio
  • List foods that may contribute to excess weight gain
  • Explain how over-consumption of certain types of foods can lead to obesity
  • Name and identify six major food groups
  • Define essential nutrients and explain their key roles in the body
  • Distinguish and choose between nutrient dense and nutrient deficient foods
  • Read and interpret food labels
  • Define metabolism and metabolic rate
  • Explain the role of the Liver in tackling obesity
  • Describe and distinguish between the roles of fat storing and fat burning hormones 
  • Explain the role of sleep and exercise in weight management
  • Create and complete daily/weekly food diary
  • Plan a healthy nutritionally balanced meal
  • Suggest minimum daily/weekly level and type of physical activity for promoting weight loss and wellbeing
