Fabricated or Induced Illness (Munchausen syndrome by proxy) The Safeguarding Approach

    Presented by Mr Brendan Gray

    Social Work Manager

    DESCRIPTION

Fabricated or induced illness (FII) is a very rare form of child abuse. It occurs when a parent or carer, usually the child’s biological parent, exaggerates or deliberately causes symptoms of illness or injuries in the child.

FII is also sometimes or historically known as Munchausen's syndrome by proxy. Munchausen's syndrome, also known as the factitious disorder, is a condition where a person pretends to be ill or causes illness or injury to themselves.

Healthcare professionals in the UK prefer to use the term fabricated or induced illness, or factitious disorder imposed on another. This is because the term Munchausen's syndrome by proxy places the emphasis on the person carrying out the abuse, rather than the victim.

    The Presentation Webinar will:

    • Give an insight into the FII Phenomenon.
    • Give advice for practice for Health and Social Care Professionals
    • Offer time for reflection, conversation and thought regarding FII.

    PRESENTER

Mr Brendan Gray is a Social Work Manager, with a PHD level interest in Fabricated or Induced Illness in content to the Safeguarding setting
